Love Life and Live
When I was a little girl about 8 years old I had the mumps and Momma and Daddy didn’t want me to infect my younger brother or sister with them so they sent me off to stay at my Grandmother and Grandpa’s house for 2 weeks to recover. I don’t remember feeling bad at all and remember that Grandma would tell me you weren’t supposed to talk so much when you had the mumps and that eating too many bread and butter pickles would make my throat worse. Sick little girls like me weren’t supposed to jump down off the side of the basement door like that…
It was time to go grocery shopping and we went to a corner country store that they always went to and I had never seen the likes of a store where you just gave the grocer the list of the items you wanted and waited at the counter and he went and gathered them all up for you. As you can imagine I was amazed. Talking all the while of course I told him and his wife that I had the mumps and was staying with my grandparents to recover and the older gentleman/store owner asked that I wait outside as he had never had the mumps and didn’t want to catch them from me.
Well this was back in the time when soda pop came in glass returnable bottles and you got a nickle for every one you returned. Grandma suggested I go out and look for some pop bottles to earn some money. I hit the jackpot when I went out around the side of the store and found a big stack of them on the store dock. I gathered up 5 or 6 as many as I could carry at one time and went back into the store to cash them in.
Made me some money that day and later when Grandma asked where I got the pop bottles from we were in the car getting ready to leave and I showed her she told me I had sold that man his own pop bottles. She had meant for me to go looking in the ditches where people threw them out.
I’ll never forget that time spent with my Grandma and Grandpa and the Damascus store where I looked up on the wall and they had this sign that said “I felt sorry for myself because I had no shoes till I met a man who had no feet”
